Most often I hear these questions, “How to train your dog at home?”, “How can we make our pet dogs learn verbal communication, behavior training, NO commands and more such techniques?”.Isn't it something intriguing to be acquainted with. Sometimes we use the wrong techniques while teaching our dogs. As we embark on the journey of exploring the minds of our dogs, we must know the right basic techniques. Reinforcement time frame for your pet dog’s behaviorA dog has a 1.3 second associative memory and they can link to a particular behaviour and its consequence for only 1.3 seconds. You only get this small opportunity to either reward or correct their behaviour. If we try to punish or yell at them after the act has already happened, they do not understand our reaction. It is of no use to react unless we don’t catch them in the act and react within that 1.3 seconds. Any appreciation or reaction to their behaviour has to take place very quickly in order to make your pet dog learn. The best language to use while you train your dog Make sure that whenever you say a word, the action also takes place. It doesn’t matter what language you are using to give them a command, it shall always be given by explaining them in action. We have to consciously ignore the usage of random words that sound right to us as the synonyms will confuse your pet. The words we use for our pet dogs have to have an exact meaning and are simplified for them to understand. Make your dog learn the ‘NO’ commandYour dog needs to be always aware that your NO is actually a command to stop doing that particular activity. Sometimes, we often end up saying ‘no’ again and again while our pet dog is still in the activity we want them to stop doing. This makes them think that no means it's okay to continue doing that activity.Make sure to stop your dog right after the NO command by either stopping them yourself or pulling them away from the activity they are into. Your dog’s behavior mysteries: jumping on people or begging for food A dog always does something because of getting some pleasure out of it. Food is not always a reinforcement for your pet dog. Activities such as digging, jumping, barking and many more give pleasure to the dog.Always try to understand what the dog is gaining out of a behaviour as dogs do not do anything without a reason. For an instance, if your dog is alone in a room and starts barking, most of the time you will open the door even if it is to tell him to be quiet and without realising we end up training them to bark if they want to see us again.Such form of attention is what provides motivation to the dog’s mystery behaviors. At the end of the day, training your pet dog is more about training yourself to be consistent and not confusing them with wrong cues. It is important to remember that dogs are creatures of habit and expect that their actions will lead from the front.
